Nest Insight fair processing notice – Contractual opt-out pilot
This fair processing notice (‘notice’) provides you with information about how your personal data will be used in research of the payroll auto-save pilot with SUEZ recycling and recovery UK.
This should be read alongside Nest Insight’s Privacy policy, which has more information about your data protection rights. We are required under Data Protection legislation to notify you of the information contained in this notice.
1. Who is accessing your data
- Suez recycling and recovery UK ‘SUEZ’ ( data controller): as your employer, they decide how your personal data is collected and used for the HR and payroll purposes, including the roll-out of the payroll auto-save pilot.
- Nest Insight (on this research project, acting as an independent data controller): we decide how your data is collected and processed for this research. Nest Insight is a public-benefit research and innovation centre focused on identifying solutions to ensure people are financially secure today and in the future.
2. What personal data we are using and why
We want to understand how payroll saving can help employees save more easily.
Since 2021, Nest Insight has been working with SUEZ to investigate how a Payroll Autosave scheme for new employees makes saving easier and more accessible. This has been very successful and supported over a thousand colleagues to get started with saving.
SUEZ are now ready to undertake a pilot to investigate rolling out the Payroll Autosave scheme to current SUEZ employees, not just new joiners.
To conduct this pilot, we need to process some personal data about employees who have been selected to participate in the pilot.
For this pilot, we will use the following personal data about you (provided by SUEZ) for the research activities only:
- age, gender, first half of postcode and income
- job details, for example, length of service, employment status, contract type and length
- pension membership and contributions
- participation in workplace savings scheme with Transave, and if relevant, account number and savings contributions.
Important: we will not collect or process information that directly identifies you, such as your name or date of birth. However, it is possible that a combination of variables may mean you are identifiable when combined with other data and information that may be publicly available. Nest Insight will not attempt to identify you using other data sources and will not share your data with third-parties.
We’ll use this data to understand whether the Payroll Autosave scheme leads to higher savings for employees taking part.
All our results are anonymised, meaning it will not be possible to identify you in any of our research findings.
Special category data
Special categories of data are more sensitive and have extra protection under Data Protection legislation. This includes data that could reveal your racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religious or philosophical beliefs, trade union membership, health data, sex life data or data concerning a person’s sexual orientation. We will not process special categories of data for this part of the research.
3. Why are we legally allowed to use your data
Our lawful basis for collecting or using personal information for is Public task (Article 6(1)(e) of the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR).
4. Sharing your data with others
We will not share any personal data provided by SUEZ recycling and recovery UK with any third parties.
5. Sending your data overseas
We will not transfer your data outside of the UK/EU.
6. Keeping and storing your data
The personal information processed for the purpose of research will only be stored for as long as is necessary to complete the research analysis and publish the findings. We will keep your personal information for no longer than six months after the completion of the research project. After this, any personal data will be fully anonymised.
Your personal data will be stored securely and only the research team will have access to it.

If you remain unhappy with how we’ve used your data after raising a complaint with us, you can also contact the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
