About Nest Insight’s conference

This is the ninth convening of our Nest Insight annual conference.

Our annual conference brings together academics, industry, policymakers and other experts working towards improving people’s financial security for today and tomorrow. These interactive convenings aim to promote a better understanding of the needs of low-moderate-income households; while also sparking debate and fresh conversations to encourage join up across the system so that it better supports people throughout their lives.

At this year’s conference, we’ll be discussing the wider business and economic benefits of action to address low financial resilience and exploring innovative solutions which have the potential to effectively tackle this important issue.

11.45	Panel discussion: Building the business case for financial resilience People’s lack of financial resilience is, at this point, well-rehearsed. A quarter of UK adults have less than £100 in savings. A lack of resilience has significant knock-on consequences for individuals and households. Those with less than £1000 in savings are at double the risk of falling into problem debt. Low financial resilience creates significant cognitive load, leading to short-term decisions and a lack of space for longer-term financial planning. Low financial resilience can drive poor mental health, which can have broader negative financial consequences as well as health ones. Those with higher financial resilience are more likely, for example, to make additional pension contributions. One potentially powerful solution – opt-out payroll saving – is now well-evidenced and recognised by many of the people involved in financial wellbeing as an important part of the solution set. But for those models to scale will require investment of time and energy by both employers and policy makers. Time and energy in both communities are scarce, and they will rightly prioritise their focus on the things that aid their competitiveness – either as firms or at a macro-economic level. The pressure to find paths to economic growth is perhaps the defining policy imperative of our time.So we need to make the case that supporting worker financial wellbeing and resilience is an investment in the bottom line – for companies and for UK PLC. This is the next frontier for driving action on resilience and savings. This panel will feature some of the incredible work that is starting to emerge that can support this case. 14.00	Keynote speech: Financial resilience and mental health
14.30	Panel discussion: New solutions for boosting household financial resilience Too many households in the UK still lack financial resilience — a challenge that’s been well-documented. While the root causes are structural and complex, from low wages and insecure housing to gaps in transport and childcare, these macro-level issues can feel out of reach. Yet there is meaningful progress to be made at the household level. When financial tools, products and services are designed inclusively, with real people’s lives in mind, they can open up new opportunities to financial resilience. This session will explore how thoughtful, human-centred design can help more people access and benefit from financial systems that truly meet their needs. We’ll hear from both experts by experience and experts by profession as we explore four emerging solution spaces: Broadening access and inclusion Supporting variable and non-standard income and payment patterns Unlocking the potential of the workplace and payroll as financial touchpoints Designing hybrid products that help people balance competing priorities Together, we’ll examine how new technologies and design approaches can shift the dial, talk about how we can design with people rather than for people, and question how we can best support promising solutions to scale.
